hoarr:

Picked up the 2011 release from The Misfits through Amazon for a little over $10, and I was a bit surprised at how amazing the packaging was. I had always perceived that the group was coasting on their name with Jerry Only being the only original member and the fact that their last album was nothing but covers of 1950’s and ‘60’s songs, but this is actually a sincere attempt to reboot the band for the third time.

That all being said, it’s such a shame that half of the tunes are absolutely unlistenable on The Devil’s Rain. They’re similar to the poppish horror-punk of the Michale Graves era of The Misfits, but Jerry Only just does not have the vocal range to make the songs memorable. In fact, the standout track to me is the closer “Death Ray”, which is apparently sung entirely by former Black Flag member Dez Cadena.

I appreciate the original tracks over the group doing covers of Paul Anka songs, I just wish that Jerry Only was a better writer.

Bryan told me to pick up this album, now posts about how bad it is. Oh well. I like the Misfits and pop punk so I’ll check it out anyway. Great packaging too.
